Tables

Planet names, sex, signs, aspects, main significations or karakatwas

Like the above table, these are more simple main characteristics of the planets of jyotish, hindu astrology, or vedic astrology. Vedic Astrologers memorize these as part of their basic training in Muni Parashara's school of astrology.

Planetary Data, Miscellaneous categories

This table includes whether the planet is malefic or benefic, what it's single word english description is, such as soul, mind, etc., it's direction, element, color and gem. These thins help us to understand a planet better. They planets rule many things, but these essential baseline rulerships or natures are the basis upon which the Muni Parashara wants us to understand them.

Signs or Rashis- main basic data

The Signs of Jyotish or Eastern Astrology, sound like the same signs used in Western Astrology, and, for the most part, the significations are very similar. This is because the Greek scholars got the goods from India early on. There is only one God, and certainly this amazing science came from God as Vedas say, so then it goes out to all people openly and equally from there. Over time, the different countries develop it separately. These basic aspects of the signs certainly must be memorized early on, as they form the basis for chart reading.

Signs cont., rise, height, mobility etc.

Continuing with the above, this is more information about the signs or jyotish rasis. Memorizing these simple tables will certainly help one to become a real Jyotishi sooner.

Houses of a jyotish chart, basic info

Like the above, now for the Houses or Bhavas. Also called Shtanas. Houses are the divisions of space around you at the time of an event, a birth, etc. They are 12 in number. They hold the signs, and rule over various affairs of life, parts of the body, parts of your relations, etc. Memorizing this table along with the other basic tables is a must.

Special signs for the planets, exalt, debil., mulatrikona, etc

This table too must be memorized. It includes the locations of the "special places" for the planets in the zodiac, where they receive their maximum and minimum strength based on rashi placement. The points are called Nicha, Ucha, and Mulatrikona or debilitation, exaltation and mulatrikona has no translation, it's just the name for where the planet gets strength almost equal to exaltation. It is the "next best" place of strength after exaltation.

Natural Frienships and Enmities between the planets

This simple tables shows what the original, constant, or natural relationships between the Grahas are. These"natural" relationships are very important in jyotish. In Hindu Jyotish, these relationships form a base of interaction. One must always know if a planet is situated happily or not. This is called "Avastas" or "states of existence". The natural and temporary enmities are very important.

Calculating temporary relationships betwixt the planets

Parasara Muni has given how to calculate the temporary friendships (Graha Maitram="planetary friendships") in a temporary way, called "tatkalika". This table shows how to calculate these temporary relationships and combine them with the permanent relationships to come up with the tatkalika or final adjusted current relationship in the chart itself.

Nakshatras, Guna, Gana, Demigod, Planetary lord etc.

More basic information on the Nakshatras, or Lunar Mansions of Jyotish (pronounced like Joeteesh, although same say Joytish, which is wrong. Joetish, Joeteesh, and Jyoetish, are more correct pronunciations of the word. The base of the word is jyoti, or light, which is pronounced as joe-tea but you must slur the j into a y a bit to get jyoe-tea, or "light" in sanskrit. This is why names like Sri Jyoti (Divine light), PC Jyotish, Visual Jyotish and Parashara's Light (sage parasharas light or wisdom or gift to the world) have sprung up along with "Goravani Jyotish" as names of software programs for the science. )

Nakshatras Span in Zodiac, Body Part Ruled

The lunar constallations, or lunar mansions, called the nakshatra, which means that they don't move around, have a certain span in the zodiac. They demark various points in the major constellations or signs. They are 27 in number, spanning 13 deg. 20 min. of arc in the zodiac each, which doesn't necessarily reflect their actual longitudinal location on the zodiac belt at times. In any case, this is how it's done. This table also shows what body part in general each asterism or jyotish star rules over.

Nakshatra Caste and Namkaran syllables

The nakshatras caste, Western Star Name, and sound-syllables used in nam-karan or name giving ceremony (picking a stellar-correct name for the child).

Varga Charts of Jyotish Applications in life

This table shows the things in life that Sri Parashara Muni has written will be ruled over by the specified varga chart. For example, the Saptamsa, the 7 part varga chart of jyotish, rules over children.

Dates Sun Changes Signs Each Month

This table simply shows the dates the Sun changes from each sign to the next sign, each month. So there are twelve entries in the table. These dates differ from Western Astrology. In Jyotish, we use the Sidereal Zodiac, which is the real one. Western Astrology is now simply off from this real zodiac by 23 degrees.

Drekkana Body Parts Rulership Table

This table shows how the various body parts are ruled over by specific one-third sections of the houses or signs of one's chart. In hindu astrology, the houses and signs are used synonomously most often since the whole-house whole-sign system is what vedic astrology is primarily based upon since forever.

Lengths of Vimshottari Maha Dashas in years and percentage

The main dasha system used by far is Vimshottari. This table shows thelenght of the maha dashas in years, and then what percentage of 120 each of those maha dashas portions is. This is handy if memorized for calculating sub periods in your mind easily. Remember that in the old times, there were no computers. Also, it has always been our Vedic tradition to memorize. Please take this into consideration before giving up memorization, leaving it to your computer. Rather think of doing some yourself for your betterment.

Tithis of the Panchang, and their Usual General Applications

The tithis are the lunar days. It is the same word as "day" except it is based on moon, not sun. That is the basis of the panchangam. What day it is in lunar calendar is determined by distance moved by moon, not sun.

Names of the Months of the Indian Calendar (Two popular versions)

The months of the Hindu calendar begin and end of either the full moon or the new moon. Most ofIndia uses the new moon as the starting point of the months. This means when the moon is conjunct the sun every 27 days or so. While other groups, like the Vaisnavas of Bengal and Vrndavan, use the full moon as the starting point of the month. They further name the months differently, after incarnations of Vishnu. They start when the moon is full, or opposite the sun in the zodiac. Because the lunar and solar or luni-solar calendar we use is not perfectly tuned to the solar year, therefore occasionally we insert adhik-mas or inserted months, into our system. So, this calendar is much more complex to understand and use than the western gregorian solar calendar which is used worldwide today which is based exclusively on the Sun.
